Description[]

Canyon is a racetrack that consists of dangerous edges, elevation changes, numerous bends, curves, and only a few straightaways, while containing many powerplays that will have your opponent flying off cliffsides or being swept away by rocks embedded in the cliffside surface or being crushed by the main star in the course, the Dam. The track conjoins with Airplane Graveyard, on the left portion of the course, and shares only a few powerplays with Airplane Graveyard. Like most tracks, it has a 3-lap count.

Due to the tight roads, this map is available only for Race, Detonator, Elimination, and Deadline.

Track[]

The track starts the racers on a small bridge that spans across a gorge. Once the player starts, they will be met with a lonely gasoline truck sitting on the righthand side and the first shortcut that can only be triggered just before the first lap is finished. Racers will begin to experience first signs of elevation changes as they enter a tunnel going downwards, followed by a sharp right turn that gives the player a stunning view of the area. As racers begin to continue, they will be met with optional powerplays like boulders being blocked by wooden barricades or a rock wall internally rigged to blow, sweeping racers off the track or being crushed by the flying debris.

Depending on what the player does, they can either:

  1. Trigger the Canyon Dam, which will crack the walls of the dam and destroy it as it brings a large section of the road down to the racers, with a cable tower landing on a small building near it as a result of the dam clipping the wire that spans across the Canyon. They can enter the core of the dam inside, where a generator is being holstered, followed by a left turn and a makeshift jump that is naturally formed in the wake of the Dam's destruction.
  2. Continue to drive along the Dam's lower section, which brings them to a bend going left, while containing two road pieces that either can be driven on, or destroyed, narrowing only sections of the original course.

If continued on the original course, racers will be met with a small cliff that extends partially over the track that can be triggered, creating two boulders which will form obstacles. Following that, racers will then approach an S-curve that leads to a small bridge, and just ahead of them, a gasoline truck, with an immediate left turn soon after. Racers will have another nice view of the landscape as they drive straight and enter a right curve, which will contain a powerplay that can be triggered to project boulders onto the road to create obstacles. They will soon be met with a beautiful view of the train bridge that spans across the Canyon, with a locomotive and a few cars.

If continuing the altered track, the racers will be met with a straightaway, and to their right sits three electric generators that can be triggered to shove opponents across the track or destroy them. Going slightly uphill, they will cross a small road bridge before being met with a gasoline truck sitting on the side of the road while going left, where there will be the second shortcut. Racers have the option to take said shortcut or continue on and reach a right curve, with a helicopter that can drop bombs from its bomb bay.

The two tracks join together into a main road where racers will have the option to detonate the right side of the wall that approaches the player when triggered, containing various sizes of rocks that will sweep the racers off the track, or take down the train bridge by first detaching the support girders, and then bringing the entire bridge down. The deck that will fall on the right-side will block half the section of road while the other side remains whole and is slumped against the road after exiting the tunnel from the beginning of the lap.

Going into a right turn and then a short left will bring the racers into a hairpin, with a sweeper crane on roadside. Exiting the hairpin will lead the racers into a small straight with an overhanging rock formation that is designed to literally crush players if triggered correctly or send them sliding off the course with it's shockwave. This is followed by a sudden elevation change going downwards and to their right will be a rock wall that upon triggering, only the luckiest racers will escape, before reaching a left turn and a helicopter hovering above to drop a bomb on racers as a last fighting effort to take them out before crossing the line.

Power-Plays[]

Canyon's power plays are based on environmental and industrial explosions. These include boulders, rock walls, gasoline trucks, helicopter bombers and destroying the dam. Canyon only has one Route Changer and two Shortcuts, with the second only accessible if the Dam is destroyed. The course also contains a total of 24 power-plays, with twenty-one being Level 1 power-plays and three being Level 2 power-plays. These include the following:

  • One sweeper
  • One cliffside edge
  • 2 helicopter bombers
  • 2 roadside rock-edges
  • 2 girders and one train bridge
  • 2 metal road grates
  • 3 gasoline trucks
  • 3 rockwalls
  • 3 electric generators
  • 4 boulder barricades

Out of all powerplays on Canyon, only 5 are shared with Airplane Graveyard.

Replays[]

Like every track in Split/Second, powerplays and route changers get their shine in the form of Instant Replays when one or multiple opponents are wrecked by the player. There are 6 powerplays that have the option to replay the carnage and these include the following:

  • Canyon Dam
  • Train Bridge and it's two girders
  • Sweeper
  • Rock-edge after Sweeper.

Trivia[]

  • The Convention Center tower from Downtown Central (as well as many large city buildings) can be seen in the far distance after passing the train bridge.
  • The Dam's name is called "AWA Dam" (AWA for Affiliated Water Authority).
  • In Season Mode, Canyon only appears five times.
    • Twice for "Boneyard Rush" in Race and Elimination form, once in "One Last Push" for the episode finale, and twice for "Out With A Bang" with a Race and for it's first Detonator for the Ryback Firestorm Challenge.
  • Only the left side of the Canyon track conjoins the road from Airplane Graveyard.
  • After triggering the first bridge girder, it slides off the edge, lands in the canyon below, and stays there until the second girder is detached. It is hard to see due to the elevation changes and draw distance.
  • Canyon shares powerplays of the gasoline truck, the train bridge's girders and itself, and the rockwall just before the bridge, along with one shortcut.
  • Canyon has two weathering cycles, at sunset (seen only in the episode "One Last Push" in the form of an Elite Race), and at noon.
